Common Internet Security Risks and Defensive Actions

03.21.10

Posted by jdybarra  |  No Comments »

Common Internet and Web Security Issues Involve 3 Areas:

1. Bugs or misconfiguration problems in the Web server that allow unauthorized remote users to:
* Steal confidential documents not intended for their eyes.
* Execute commands on the server host machine, allowing them to modify the system.
* Gain information about the Web server’s host machine that will allow them to break into the system.
* Launch denial-of-service attacks, rendering the machine temporarily unusable.

2. Browser-side (User-side) risks, including:
* Active content that crashes the browser, damages the user’s system, breaches the user’s privacy, or merely creates an annoyance.
* The misuse of personal information knowingly or unkowingly provided by the end-user.

3. Interception of network data sent from browser to server or vice versa via network eavesdropping at any point on the pathway between browser and server including:
* The network on the browser’s side of the connection.
* The network on the server’s side of the connection (including intranets).
* The end-user’s Internet service provider (ISP).
* The server’s ISP.
* Either ISPs’ regional access provider.

General Precautions to Reduce Risk to Internet Security Issues:

1. Update operating system on a regular basis
2. Use a reliable anti-virus, such as: AVG, Trend Micro or Eset. Make sure you keep the software updated configured properly – http://anti-virus-software-review.toptenreviews.com/
3. Use a reliable anti-spyware, such as Spy Sweeper and Ad-Aware. Many anti-virus also come with anti-spyware. Make sure you use the software properly – http://anti-spyware-review.toptenreviews.com/
4) Firefox is the most secure browser to use – http://www.consumersearch.com/web-browser-reviews
5) Create an administrative password for your computer solely to make major changes to the computer. Create a user login with reduced access for day-to-day activities.
6) http v https: https provides a secure encrypted way of transfering data over the Internet. Make sure you are on an https url when transmitting banking information, login information, etc.
7) User activity is the best way to get infected – Do not go to gambling or adult websites. Be careful what links you click or what software you install. Always download and install software from a reliable location, such as microsoft.com.
8. Do not store login info, credit card numbers or any other sensitive data on your computer. If you must do this, make sure the data is encrypted.
9. Choose passwords that are easy for you to remember but difficult for others to figure out. Change passwords on a regular basis, especially for sensitive accounts.
10. Create a dummy email account. Use this when you sign up for general information. Use a separate account for more private transactions.
11. Be alert for minor changes. Make sure you check your sensitive accounts regularly. If you notice any unexplained minor changes, take precautions and change account login info.

Listing Price Comparisons: NetworkingWave.com, Google.com, LinkedIn.com and Yellowpages.com

Listing Price Comparisons: NetworkingWave.com, Google.com, LinkedIn.com and Yellowpages.com

NetworkingWave.com
NetworkingWave.com offers more than just a few lines of information and a link back to your website. We offer a community of business owners who want to network and communicate with you and many tools in order to accomplish this, such as: Membership Directory, Events Calendars, Email Blasts, Networking Events, Improved Search Engine Listings, Free Seminars and more. There are currently three levels of membership: Standard Quarterly, Non-Profit and Elite Member. Standard Quarterly Membership is $15 every 3 months. This system is free to qualified non-profit organizations. And Standard Quarterly Members who refer 10 other paying members become Elite Members. The Elite Membership is free and is placed on the top of the business listings.

This is a comparison between NetworkingWave.com and some of the other options on the Internet to advertise, market and network your business.

LinkedIn.com
LinkedIn.com offers an online membership directory. The member profile can only be viewed by other LinkedIn members. One must go through the hassle of the membership process in order to view information regarding any of its members. The member is limited to the amount of content that can be put in a listing. There are 3 account types available: Personal (Free), Business ($20/month) and Business Plus ($50/month). Each level offers more features and better customer service.

Yellowpages.com
Yellowpages.com offers online advertising. A business can place a very brief description of the business with telephone, address, email and website. This advertisement will only show in correlation to a specific city with a limit of 5 business categories. There are 4 account types: Free ($0/month*), Bronze ($35/month*), Silver ($55/month*), Gold ($79/month*) and Platinum ($129/month). *: Prices vary by Zip Code.

Google.com
Google.com offers online pay-per-click advertising. A business can place a 3 line advertisement on the right hand side in association with selected keyword search results. A potential client clicks on the advertisement and is sent over from Google to that person’s website, and the business is charged for that opportunity. The cost of each “Click” varies upon demand. The higher the demand, the higher the price. A click only brings traffic to a website. It does not guarantee any purchase. A problem associated with Pay-Per-Click is that some competitors could click those adds just to make that business pay out more advertisement dollars. In its defense, Google has some programming in place to reduce this problem, but it is not 100% effective.

Example of Pay-Per-Click Prices:

Keyword Phrase (Approx. Cost Per Click):

auto insurance ($34.00)

bookkeeping ($3.95)

candles ($1.35)

cosmetics ($2.15)

financial planner ($6.28)

janitorial services ($2.87)

payroll services ($10.40)

pizza restaurant ($0.76)

real estate ($2.73)

reverse mortgage ($14.92)

shabby chic ($0.70)

travel agent ($1.73)

Prices for Pay-Per-Click range from a few pennies to tens of dollars for every single potential client that follows the advertisement from Google to a website. This can quickly become a very expensive form of advertisement. And there is another issue. There is no purpose for these pay-per-click services if that business does not have a website.

NetworkingWave.com offers a large variety of services for no more than $5 per month. Compare and save with NetworkingWave.com.
